Planetary Gemstone Consultation —
From Parashara to Modern Science
The gemstone that channels a planet's rays into the human body — that is a ratna. A complete classical and scientific analysis of the nine planetary gemstones and substitute stones.
In the 83rd chapter of the Parashara Hora Shastra it is said — "Grahanam rashmibhih sarvam jagat vyaptam characharam" — the entire world of moving and unmoving things is pervaded by the rays of the planets. Every planet radiates light at a specific wavelength. A gemstone absorbs and diffuses those rays, transmitting them into the human body.
Modern mineralogy has confirmed that every crystal has its own piezoelectric property and electromagnetic resonance. The chromium ions in ruby absorb and emit light at a specific wavelength. The beryl matrix of emerald has been believed for thousands of years to resonate with the green rays of Mercury.
"A gemstone is not a magic charm — it is a cosmic antenna that tunes your intention to a specific planetary wavelength. But the antenna must be correct; the wrong gemstone transmits the wrong signal." — Dr. Prodyut Acharya
Important: This page is entirely educational. We do not sell gemstones. Our work is to advise you on how to select the right gemstone after examining your birth chart. Which gemstone to wear for which planet — this question cannot be answered without analyzing the birth chart.

Ruby — The Gem of the Soul and Leadership
Which gemstone belongs to the Sun? — Ruby (Manikya). The stone of self-confidence, leadership and paternal bonds.
In Vedic philosophy the Sun is the Atmakaraka — the significator of the soul. The Katha Upanishad declares: "Nayamatma balahinena labhyah" — the soul cannot be realised by the weak. The rays of the Sun are that strength. The deep crimson glow of Ruby is the earthly representative of solar power.
The Surya Sukta of the Rig Veda (1.50) describes the Sun as the eye of the universe. When the Sun is weak in a birth chart, a person loses inner vision. The benefit of Ruby is that it revives that lost vision, leadership and the power of self-expression.
"He who knows the Self knows the Sun. He who knows the Sun finds the language of Ruby clear." — Commentary on the Parashara Hora Shastra
Marcus Aurelius wrote in his Meditations: "You have power over your mind, not outside events." Ruby awakens that inner power — it does not change the outer circumstance but transforms your response to it.

Red Garnet
An affordable alternative to Ruby — the stone of confidence and leadership
🔬 The deep red of Almandine Garnet arises from the presence of Fe²⁺ and Fe³⁺ ions. In Vedic astrology it absorbs the Sun's wavelength (620–750 nm, red spectrum). The resemblance of its colour to blood haemoglobin underlies the traditional belief that it grants strength and vitality.
When the Sun's strength is weak, self-confidence diminishes, leadership is lost and distance grows in paternal relationships. Red Garnet strengthens the Sun's power, increasing leadership and respect. The Parashara Hora Shastra describes the Sun's colour as tamravarna (copper-red) — Red Garnet is the representative of that copper hue.

Moonstone (Chandrakanta)
An affordable alternative to Pearl — the stone of mental peace and family happiness
🔬 Adularescence in Moonstone occurs due to light scattering between layers of Orthoclase and Albite. It resonates with the Moon's wavelength. Research suggests it may lower cortisol, the stress hormone.
Moonstone supports mental stability, emotional regulation and family peace. The Chandrashekhar Samhita mentions that Chandrakanta absorbs the Moon's rays — hence the ancient practice of placing it outdoors on a full moon night to "charge" it. A symbol of maternal power, feminine energy and compassion.
🔍 Commonly searched: "moon substitute gemstone" · "alternative to pearl" · "moonstone astrology benefits"
Especially favourable for Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces ascendants. During the Moon's Mahadasha (10 years), wear Blue Sheen Moonstone if Pearl is not available. Carnelian strengthens Mars's energy — courage, work capacity and decisiveness. Mars is the general among the planets — the emblem of Kartikeya. The Skanda Purana describes Mars's colour as raktavarna (red). Carnelian's bright orange-red is the carrier of that energy. Known in both ancient Egyptian and Indian cultures as a stone of courage and protection.

🔬 Peridot is one of the oldest gemstones on earth — it is also found in meteorites. The gem-quality form of the mineral Olivine. Its green colour aligns with Mercury's green hue. In crystal therapy it is believed to support the nervous system and brain function.
Peridot enhances intellect, education, communication and business acumen. The Parashara Hora Shastra describes Mercury's colour as harita (green). An affordable alternative to Yellow Sapphire — the stone of wisdom and financial fortune
🔬 Citrine is yellow Quartz — the golden colour comes from Fe³⁺ trace impurities. Yellow Topaz (Al₂SiO₄(F,OH)₂, Mohs 8.0) is a more valuable substitute. Its golden glow directly corresponds to Jupiter's yellow colour. Modern research suggests it may support serotonin production and mental enthusiasm.
Yellow Topaz or Citrine enhances wisdom, teaching ability, spirituality and financial fortune. The Parashara Hora Shastra describes Jupiter's colour as pita (yellow). Jupiter is the guru of the gods — significator of wisdom, dharma, children and good fortune. Citrine absorbs that yellow wavelength and opens the path of prosperity.

Especially favourable for Sagittarius and Pisces ascendants. During Jupiter's Mahadasha (16 years), wear Citrine or Yellow Topaz if Yellow Sapphire is not available. Effective for delayed marriage, obstacles to children and financial crises. Wear it on a Thursday morning.
- Heated Amethyst is often sold as Citrine — natural Citrine is a lighter golden yellow
- Prolonged exposure to sunlight can fade the colour
- Verify Jupiter's placement for Gemini, Virgo and Libra ascendants
- Avoid synthetic Citrine — buy Lab Certified

White Zircon
An affordable alternative to Diamond — the stone of love and beauty
🔬 White Zircon's Refractive Index (RI: 1.93–1.98) is close to that of diamond (RI: 2.42) — hence its near-dazzling brilliance. It is one of the oldest minerals on earth — 4.4 billion-year-old Zircon has been found in Australia. Its colourless brilliance matches Venus's white radiance perfectly.
White Zircon enhances love, beauty, artistic sensibility and relationships. The Parashara Hora Shastra describes Venus's colour as shveta (white). Venus is the significator of love, marriage, art and luxury. White Zircon absorbs that white wavelength and sweetens marital life. The word 'Zircon' comes from the Persian 'Zargun' (golden) — the symbol of beauty.
🔍 Commonly searched: "venus substitute gemstone" · "alternative to diamond" · "white zircon astrology benefits"
Especially favourable for Taurus and Libra ascendants. During Venus's Mahadasha (20 years), wear White Zircon if Diamond is not available. Effective for marriage obstacles, relationship complications and success in the arts. Wear it on a Friday evening.
- Cubic Zirconia (CZ) is not Zircon — it is entirely synthetic. Buy Natural Zircon
- Zircon is brittle — it may crack on impact. Handle carefully
- If Venus is adverse for Virgo and Gemini ascendants, consult an expert
- Buy Lab Certified Natural Zircon — Sri Lankan origin is finest

Amethyst
A safer alternative to Blue Sapphire — the stone of patience and stability
🔬 Amethyst's violet colour comes from Fe³⁺ ions and natural gamma radiation. From the Greek 'amethustos' — 'free from intoxication'. Research suggests potential for increased melatonin production and stress reduction. It aligns with Saturn's blue-violet wavelength.
Amethyst reduces Saturn's suffering, increasing patience and stability. Saturn is the god of karmic fruits — his Sade Sati or Dhaiya is often a source of fear. Blue Sapphire is powerful but dangerous — Amethyst carries that same Saturnian energy, safely. Violet symbolises restraint, patience and spiritual growth.
🔍 Commonly searched: "saturn substitute gemstone" · "alternative to blue sapphire" · "amethyst astrology benefits"
Especially favourable for Capricorn and Aquarius ascendants. During Saturn's Sade Sati or Dhaiya, if Blue Sapphire is not worn, try Amethyst experimentally — test for 3 days, and if no issues arise, continue. Helpful for impatience, depression and chronic illness. Wear it on a Saturday night.
- Avoid heated or synthetic Amethyst — deep purple is more likely to be natural
- Prolonged sunlight can fade the colour
- Saturn is adverse for Leo and Aries ascendants — caution required
- Sudden reactions are rare with Amethyst (unlike Blue Sapphire) — but still consult first

Honey Zircon
An affordable alternative to Hessonite — the stone that dispels confusion and fear
🔬 Honey Zircon's brown-honey colour comes from Uranium and Thorium trace elements. It resonates with the same spectrum as Hessonite (Hessonite Garnet). It matches Rahu's smoky colour and the opaque honey tone. High RI (1.92–1.97) also gives it brilliance.
Honey Zircon helps reduce Rahu's confusion, fears and sudden problems. Rahu is the shadow planet — significator of illusion, fear, mystery and sudden change. Hessonite is Rahu's primary gemstone; Honey Zircon is its affordable substitute. The honey-brown colour balances Rahu's tamasic energy.
🔍 Commonly searched: "rahu substitute gemstone" · "alternative to hessonite" · "honey zircon astrology benefits"
Especially helpful if Rahu is a yogakaraka for Gemini, Virgo, Capricorn or Aquarius ascendants. During Rahu's Mahadasha (18 years), try Honey Zircon experimentally if Hessonite is not available. Effective for obstacles in foreign travel, success in technology and overcoming mental fears. Wear it on a Saturday or Wednesday.
- Natural Honey Zircon is sometimes mis-sold as Hessonite — they are different stones; insist on a lab certificate
- Zircon is brittle — it may crack on impact; handle with care
- Rahu is a very powerful planet — birth chart analysis is essential before wearing
- Rahu may be adverse for Leo and Cancer ascendants

Lapis Lazuli
An alternative to Cat's Eye — the stone of spirituality and protection
🔬 Lapis Lazuli is a metamorphic rock — composed of Lazurite, Calcite and Pyrite. The golden Pyrite specks resemble stars in a night sky — a symbol of Ketu's mysterious cosmic energy. Its use dates back over 6,000 years.
Lapis Lazuli grants spirituality, intuition and protection from negative energy. Ketu is the significator of liberation and spiritual freedom — his gemstone is Lehsunia (Cat's Eye). Lapis Lazuli is the affordable carrier of that spiritual wavelength. In ancient Egypt it was the 'stone of the gods' — found in the tombs of the pharaohs. The Skanda Purana also mentions the spiritual qualities of bluish gemstones.
🔍 Commonly searched: "ketu substitute gemstone" · "alternative to cat's eye" · "lapis lazuli astrology benefits"
Especially favourable for Scorpio and Aries ascendants (Mars is linked with Ketu). During Ketu's Mahadasha (7 years), try Lapis Lazuli experimentally if Lehsunia is not available. Helpful for spiritual practice, meditation, warding off negative energy and release from past-life karma. Wear it on a Tuesday or Thursday.
- Dyed Howlite or Sodalite is often sold as Lapis — genuine Lapis has Pyrite specks
- It is a soft stone (Mohs 5–6) — it scratches when rubbed against harder objects
- Acids and soaps can discolour it — wipe only with a soft cloth
- Ketu is a highly spiritual planet — birth chart analysis is required before wearing
Substitute gemstones also require a birth chart analysis
Like the primary gemstones, a substitute gem worn wrongly can produce the opposite result. Dr. Prodyut Acharya will analyse your birth chart and determine the correct substitute gem, the day to wear it and the finger — for just ₹1001.
Uparatna — Substitute and Supportive Gemstones
Choosing a substitute gem by planet — do affordable gems work? What is the Moon's substitute, Saturn's substitute — the complete guide
What is an Uparatna? A lower-priced gemstone used as a substitute for a primary planetary gemstone is called an upratna. For example, Citrine can be used when Yellow Sapphire is not available. However, the astrological potency of a substitute is lower than that of the primary gemstone.
Do affordable gems work? Yes, to some extent — though not as powerfully as the primary gemstone. With a substitute gemstone, results take longer and the effect is milder. If your budget is limited, a substitute may be used — but always consult an expert first.

Rules for Wearing Gemstones — How Many Carats, Which Finger
How many carats should a gemstone be? The general rule is 1 ratti for every 15 kg of body weight. For a 60 kg person, a minimum of 4 ratti is recommended. The optimum, however, is whatever an expert advises.
Which finger should a gemstone be worn on? Ring finger — the gemstones of the Sun and Mars. Little finger — the Moon's gemstone. Index finger — Jupiter's gemstone. Middle finger — the gemstones of Saturn, Rahu and Ketu.
How to choose a gemstone by examining the birth chart: (1) Determine the ascendant (2) Note the placement of the ascendant lord (3) Identify the yogakaraka planet (4) Consider the current Mahadasha and Antardasha (5) Evaluate the strength of the 5th and 9th houses — without examining these five factors, gemstone advice is incomplete.

Which Root Belongs to Which Planet — The Ritual of Wearing Planetary Roots
Beyond gemstones, the shastras prescribe the wearing of planetary roots (mul) — when a planet is adverse.
🧵 Rule of wearing: Tie the root with a thread of the corresponding planet's colour and wear it.
🌑 Threads for Rahu and Ketu: The conventional colour list covers the seven planets; for the two shadow planets we do not have a separate list. The Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (Chapter 3) describes Rahu as smoky and blue-tinged, and Ketu as similar to Rahu — the text does not give Ketu a distinct colour of its own. Therefore for both, a grey or dark-blue thread is used. If in doubt, do not decide on your own — seek consultation.
⚠ The ritual of wearing roots applies when a planet is adverse. Which planet is adverse in your birth chart cannot be determined without analysis — so do not choose on your own. The root is something to be worn, not eaten.
