Namakaran Sanskar — the baby's name from the birth Nakshatra (Baby Name by Date of Birth)

Naming is one of the sixteen sacred Vedic sanskaras. The Nakshatra the Moon occupies at the moment of birth (Birth Star / Janma Nakshatra), together with its Pada (pada / charana), fixes the auspicious first syllable from which the child is named. That method is called the Namakaran Sanskar ceremony.

Some call it namakaran, some look for a baby name by date of birth or namkaran by date of birth (date of birth se namkaran) — it is all the same work: finding the auspicious first syllable from the pada of the birth nakshatra. Boy or girl, the rule is the same.

Why does a name from the birth Nakshatra matter?

In Vedic astrology, the position of the planets and Nakshatras in the sky at the moment of birth influences the child's whole life. The power of the Nakshatra the Moon occupies has a deep influence on the child's mind and personality. The shastra says that beginning the name with that Nakshatra's own seed-syllable brings the child happiness, prosperity and health.

27 Nakshatras and 108 Padas — the classical basis of naming

Vedic astrology counts 27 Nakshatras, each of 4 Padas (charanas) — 108 Padas in all. The shastra fixes one auspicious seed-syllable for every Pada. This calculator uses the VSOP87 planetary model with the Lahiri Ayanamsa to fix the Moon's exact position at birth, and from it the Nakshatra and Pada.

Which name should a child born on a given weekday be given?

In the shastra the auspicious first syllable of a name is fixed by the birth nakshatra and its pada — not by the weekday of birth. No authoritative text gives a separate syllable for a child born on Sunday, Tuesday or Saturday, so nothing of the kind is stated on this page.

The weekday matters elsewhere — each weekday has a ruling planet, and what counts is how that planet stands in the chart. Being born on any particular weekday is not in itself auspicious or inauspicious.

      SundaySun
      MondayMoon
      TuesdayMars
      WednesdayMercury
      ThursdayJupiter
      FridayVenus
      SaturdaySaturn

Your child's weekday of birth is shown in the Panchang section of the result above. Choosing the day for the Namakaran Sanskar is a separate muhurta question — take an astrologer's advice for that.

      Frequently asked questions

What is the Namakaran Sanskar, and why does it matter?

Namakaran is one of the sixteen Vedic sanskaras. The auspicious first syllable is fixed from the child's birth Nakshatra and Pada, and the name is given from it. A rightly chosen name is said to bring happiness, prosperity and spiritual growth.

How is the name fixed from the birth Nakshatra (name by date of birth)?

The Nakshatra the Moon occupies at birth is called the birth Nakshatra. Each of the 27 Nakshatras has 4 Padas (charanas), and every Pada has its own fixed auspicious first syllable (bija-akshara). A name beginning with that syllable is held to bring auspicious results.

Is this Namakaran calculator accurate? (Is this namakaran calculator accurate?)

Yes. It fixes the Nakshatra and Pada using the internationally recognised VSOP87 planetary model together with the Lahiri Ayanamsa — a dependable method that follows the classical rules of Vedic astrology.

Is the birthplace required for Namakaran?

Yes, the birthplace is needed. Latitude and longitude are required for the correct Lagna and for the full Panchang. You can fill them in easily by searching for the city or using the GPS button.

Can the birth chart also be made from this page?

Yes. After the Namakaran result, pressing 'Analyse the birth chart' carries the birth details straight to the kundali page and builds the complete chart.

How far can the Namakaran reading be relied on?

This tool gives general information based on the Vedic shastra. The Nakshatra and Pada are computed accurately with VSOP87, but for a judgement on personal circumstances the advice of an expert astrologer is always to be preferred.

Can a name be given if the child is born on a Tuesday?

Yes, a name can be given whatever the weekday of birth. In the classical method the first letter of the name is fixed by the birth Nakshatra and its Pada, not by the weekday. The weekday only tells which planet rules that day (Mars on Tuesday). Give the date, time and place of birth and this page shows the child's auspicious first syllable.

If a child is born on a Thursday, how is the name decided for a boy and for a girl?

Whether the child is a boy or a girl, the first syllable comes from the Pada of the birth Nakshatra. Thursday's ruling planet is Jupiter, but that does not change the first syllable. Once the first syllable is known, the family chooses the name it likes.

Does being born on a Sunday decide the rashi?

The weekday does not decide the rashi. The janma rashi (birth rashi) is the rashi the Moon was in at the time of birth, so two children born on the same Sunday can have different rashis. For the correct rashi, the date, time and place of birth are needed.

If the child is born abroad, can the Namakaran be viewed?

Yes. Any city in the world can be chosen as the birthplace — by typing its name to search, or with the GPS button; the calculation is made for that place and birth time.

Can the saved details be found on another phone too?

Yes, if you are logged in. Then the birth details you have saved, your own or your family's, can be found from another phone or computer as well; without logging in, they stay saved only in this browser.

Is viewing the Namakaran free? How much does the PDF cost?

Viewing the result is always free. The formatted PDF report costs ₹51.
