Why does Mahalaya fall on a different date every year?

Mahalaya follows the lunar tithi, not the Gregorian date. A lunar year is about 11 days shorter than a solar year, so the day moves about 11 days earlier each year. When the gap grows too wide an extra month (Adhika Masa) is inserted to correct it — and that year the day falls about a month later.
