“Saptamyadi-kalpe Ashtami-vihita Sri Sri Jagaddhatri Puja prashasta” — what the line means
On the day of Jagaddhatri Puja the panjika prints this line. Word by word:
- Kalpa — The scheme of the puja — on which tithi it begins and over which tithis it continues.
- Saptamyadi kalpa — “Beginning with Saptami”: the scheme that starts on Saptami, with a separate puja on each of three tithis — Saptami, Ashtami and Navami. The panjika calls it the “first kalpa”.
- Ashtami-vihita puja — The puja prescribed for the Ashtami tithi.
- Prashasta — Recommended — the proper, best time for this puja.
So the whole line means: for those who follow the scheme beginning on Saptami (the first kalpa), the Ashtami puja is best performed in the Ashtami time given above. For the Navami day the panjika prints “Navami-vihita puja in the first, Saptamyadi kalpa” — the Navami puja of the same scheme.
On that same day it also prints “Ratrikala-vihita puja of the second kalpa” — the second scheme, in which the puja is performed on the night of Navami. That is why in some places the Ashtami puja is the main one and in others the Navami puja — the auspicious times of both days are given above.

Why does Jagaddhatri Puja fall on a different date every year?
Jagaddhatri Puja follows the lunar tithi, not the Gregorian date. A lunar year is about 11 days shorter than a solar year, so the day moves about 11 days earlier each year. When the gap grows too wide an extra month (Adhika Masa) is inserted to correct it — and that year the day falls about a month later.
