How to read a kundli — a sample birth-chart report, step by step
The easiest way to learn to read a kundli (Vedic birth chart) is with a real report beside you. This page shows the main sections of a complete MyAstrology kundli report, each preceded by a short note on how to read it.
⚠️ The native is fictional — 15 January 1990, 10:30 am, Kolkata (India). The sample was produced by the same calculation engine that makes every MyAstrology kundli and PDF report, so your own chart will look exactly like this. The full report for this native runs to 90 pages; eight sections are shown here. (Sample generated: 18 October 2026)

Step 1 — Birth details: the foundation
Everything rests on an accurate date, time and place of birth. The Lagna (ascendant) moves through a whole sign in about two hours on average, so an error of a few minutes can shift the Lagna or the houses. The place gives the latitude and longitude, and the clock that was actually in use there on that day (time zone, war time, summer time).
Sample native: 15 January 1990, 10:30 am, Kolkata (India).
Step 2 — Lagna, Moon sign and birth nakshatra
Three facts identify every kundli —
- Lagna (ascendant): the sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. It is the 1st house of the chart — which is why the birth time matters so much.
- Moon sign (rashi): the sign the Moon occupies at birth. In everyday Indian usage "my rashi" means this, and daily horoscopes and transits are read from it.
- Birth nakshatra: the lunar mansion the Moon occupies. The Vimshottari dasha starts from it, and the first letter for a baby's name comes from its pada.
Step 3 — Rashi chart and Navamsha (the birth chart)
This is the North Indian chart. Here the houses are fixed: the top-centre diamond is always the 1st house (the Lagna), and the houses run anticlockwise from it — the triangle to its upper left is the 2nd house, and so on round the chart. The number in each house is the sign placed there (1 = Aries … 12 = Pisces); in the sample the 1st house shows 12, so the Lagna is Pisces.
The small number beside each planet is the serial number of the nakshatra it occupies (Ashwini 1 … Revati 27), and a small ᴿ marks a retrograde planet.
The second chart, the Navamsha (D-9), divides each sign into nine parts; the report uses it for marriage and fortune. Below the sample, the same chart is shown in the other two styles.
The same chart in three styles
MyAstrology draws charts in three styles — East Indian (Bengali), North Indian and South Indian — in the kundli, kundli matching, prashna and varshaphal tools. The PDF is printed in whichever style you pick on the page. Above is the North Indian chart; here is the same native's rashi chart in the other two styles:
Step 4 — Planetary positions
This table holds the numbers behind the chart: each planet's sign and exact degree, and its nakshatra and pada. When two planets share a house in the chart, the degrees show how close they really are. Positions are sidereal (Lahiri ayanamsa).
Planetary positions
| Planet | Rashi | Degree | Nakshatra (pada) | House |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lagna | Pisces | 16°33'46" | Uttara Bhadrapada 4th pada | 1 |
| Sun | Capricorn | 1°03'33" | Uttara Ashadha 2nd pada | 11 |
| Moon | Leo | 20°07'11" | Purva Phalguni 3rd pada | 6 |
| Mars | Scorpio | 25°58'48" | Jyeshtha 3rd pada | 9 |
| MercuryR | Sagittarius | 17°49'54" | Purva Ashadha 2nd pada | 10 |
| JupiterR | Gemini | 9°40'44" | Ardra 1st pada | 4 |
| VenusR | Capricorn | 7°08'15" | Uttara Ashadha 4th pada | 11 |
| Saturn | Sagittarius | 23°33'31" | Purva Ashadha 4th pada | 10 |
| Rahu | Capricorn | 23°59'03" | Dhanishtha 1st pada | 11 |
| Ketu | Cancer | 23°59'03" | Ashlesha 3rd pada | 5 |
Step 5 — Planets in the houses
The core of reading a kundli: which planet sits in which house, and what it gives. The main matters of the twelve houses —
- 1st body, personality
- 2nd wealth, family, speech
- 3rd courage, siblings
- 4th mother, home, comfort
- 5th learning, children
- 6th enemies, debts, litigation
- 7th marriage, partners
- 8th longevity, hidden matters
- 9th fortune, dharma, father
- 10th career, profession
- 11th gains, income
- 12th expenditure, liberation
Below, the house results for every planet of the sample native, exactly as printed in the report.

Step 6 — Manglik and Kaal Sarp dosha
The two questions asked most often before marriage. The report shows which house Mars occupies and whether the dosha forms; Kaal Sarp checks whether all the planets lie on one side of the Rahu–Ketu axis. Even when a dosha is present, the final word on a marriage comes from comparing both charts — see Kundli matching.
Manglik & Kalasarpa dosha
In the Moon chart Mars is in your Fourth (4th ) house — this is a Manglik house.
Mars in the 4th — tension in domestic life, property disputes.
Effect: There may be delay in marriage, discord in married life and tension in the relationship. However, when Manglik dosha is present, marriage to another Manglik partner cancels the dosha on both sides.
Remedy:
• Worship Hanuman and recite the Sundarakanda every Tuesday
• Fast on Tuesdays or donate red masoor dal
• The Kumbha-vivaha or Vishnu-vivaha rite before marriage
• Wear a 3-faced Rudraksha (to pacify Mars)
• Wear a Red Coral — on expert advice
Step 7 — Yogas in the chart
Special planetary combinations — Raj yoga, Dhana yoga, the Pancha Mahapurusha yogas and others. The report lists only the yogas that actually form in this chart, and which planets form each one.
Yogas in the chart
| Planet | Functional nature | Position | Strength (Shadbala) | Special role |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sun | Malefic | 11th house | Very strong (7.43) | — |
| Moon | Auspicious | 6th house | Strong (7.17) | — |
| Mars | Auspicious | 9th house | Strong (5.90) | — |
| Mercury | Malefic | 10th house | Moderate (7.57) | — |
| Jupiter | Average | 4th house | Strong (8.56) | — |
| Venus | Malefic | 11th house | Strong (6.62) | — |
| Saturn | Malefic | 10th house | Moderate (5.20) | Maraka |
| Name of the yoga | Type | Nature | Planetary strength | Details |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lakshmi Yoga | Wealth | Auspicious | ✓ Strong | The 9th lord Mars in its own sign — in the 9th house |
| Kemadruma Dosha | Dosha | Inauspicious | ✓ Strong | No planet on either side of the Moon — mental restlessness |
| Manglik Dosha | Dosha | Inauspicious | ✓ Strong | Mars in the 9th house from the ascendant and the 4th from the Moon — care is needed in marriage; see the dosha section for details |
| Bhumi-Artha-Labha Yoga | House lord | Auspicious | ✓ Strong | Lord of the 10th house Jupiter and lord of the 11th house Saturn — mutual aspect · a yoga for gaining land, money and goods |
| Rina-Vyaya Yoga | House lord | Inauspicious | ◐ Moderate | Lord of the 11th house Saturn and lord of the 12th house Saturn — one planet rules both houses · a tendency to debt and excess expenditure — care in saving |
| Vittahani Yoga | House lord | Inauspicious | ✓ Strong | Lord of the 12th house Saturn and lord of the 1st house Jupiter — mutual aspect · loss of money and heavy expenditure — financial caution |
Step 8 — Vimshottari dasha: when results come
Houses and yogas tell you what; the dasha tells you when. The Vimshottari cycle lasts 120 years, with nine planetary periods in a fixed order — Ketu 7 · Venus 20 · Sun 6 · Moon 10 · Mars 7 · Rahu 18 · Jupiter 16 · Saturn 19 · Mercury 17 years. It starts from the lord of the birth nakshatra, and the first period is shortened in proportion to the part of the nakshatra the Moon had already crossed. Each mahadasha is divided into nine antardashas.
Vimshottari Dasha
Balance of dasha at birth: Venus daśā, 9.82 years remained
Current Mahadasha: Rahu (3.9 / 18.0 years — 22% complete)
Antardasha: Jupiter (1.24 / 2.40 years — 52% complete)
Step 9 — Gemstone recommendation from the birth chart
This page of the report recommends gemstones from the Lagna lord (first) and the 5th lord (second), following the Parashara Hora Shastra as the report itself states — together with remedy mantras for the running dasha, how to wear the stone, and which gemstones must never be worn together.
Gemstones are optional — consult an experienced astrologer before wearing one. More on the nine gemstones and their planets: Gemstones.

The software behind this report
- Planetary positions are computed by MyAstrology's own implementation of the VSOP87 planetary theory — not by a third-party service. Ayanamsa: Lahiri (Chitrapaksha). Rahu and Ketu: mean node, as in the printed Bishuddha Siddhanta Panjika. The clock actually in force at the birthplace on the birth date is used (war time, summer time).
- Accuracy is measured, not assumed: positions are compared automatically with Swiss Ephemeris on 401 dates (1950–2050) and with the printed Bishuddha Siddhanta Panjika. Details: Technology.
- Classical rules in code: Vimshottari periods from the classical table; Shadbala following B. V. Raman's Graha and Bhava Balas, checked against the 49 figures of the book's worked example.
- Three chart styles — East Indian (Bengali), North Indian and South Indian — in the kundli, kundli matching, prashna and varshaphal tools; the PDF is printed in the chosen style.
- No AI writes this free report — every page comes from the calculation engine and its rules.
- The premium report (optional) uses exactly the same calculations; Google Gemini then writes a personalised interpretation from them — about 10–12 more pages — and Dr. Prodyut Acharya reads every report and corrects it where needed before delivery. AI helps with the writing — never with the astronomy. Details: Methodology.
Questions and answers
Can I see a sample kundli PDF?
Yes. This page is taken from a complete PDF report, and the whole report for a sample native can be opened free with the "Open the sample PDF" button. Your own kundli is free on the page; the full PDF report is paid.
How is a birth chart made?
It used to be worked out by hand from a panchang and ascendant tables. Now you enter the date, time and place of birth on the Kundli page and the chart, planetary positions, houses and dashas are produced at once — exactly like this page.
Can a kundli be read without the birth time?
Not fully. The Lagna changes sign roughly every two hours, so without the time the Lagna and the houses cannot be fixed. The Moon sign often stays the same all day, but the Moon moves about 13° a day, so the nakshatra can change. When the birth time is unknown, Prashna (horary astrology) is an alternative.
Is this report written by AI?
No. The free kundli and the PDF report are produced entirely by MyAstrology's own calculation engine. Only the interpretation in the optional premium report is written by Google Gemini, from the same calculations — and Dr. Prodyut Acharya reads every one.
Who is the native in this sample?
No one — the birth details are fictional (15 January 1990, 10:30 am, Kolkata (India)). The sample was produced by the same engine that makes every MyAstrology kundli and PDF report.
Astrology shows tendencies, not certainties. Remedies are optional traditional practices — not a substitute for medical, legal or financial advice.
