What Is Prashna Kundali — When and How to Ask, Free Answers

"Will I get the job? Will my daughter's marriage happen this year? Will the lost ring be found?" — questions like these come suddenly, often at night, and the birth chart is rarely at hand.

For exactly such moments, astrology has a separate branch — Prashna Jyotish, or prashna kundali (Horary Astrology in English). No birth date or birth time is needed. The chart is drawn for the moment you ask, for the place where you are, and the answer is sought in it.

How horary astrology works

A birth chart is cast for the moment of birth; a prashna chart is cast for the moment of the question. Lagna, planetary positions, the Moon, the tithi — everything is read, just as in a birth chart. The difference is that it does not picture a whole life — it answers a single question.

The idea of giving the moment of a question such weight is not unique to astrology. The Swiss psychologist Carl Jung wrote in a 1952 essay of "synchronicity" — meaningful coincidence, where two events not bound by cause and effect can coincide meaningfully at the same moment. His interest in astrology is also well known. Many see a likeness between this and the prashna idea of "the moment a question arises in the mind" — but it is a philosophical idea, not scientific proof.

Depending on the subject of the question, one house of the chart is taken as the "question house". In MyAstrology's prashna, for example:

What is weighed to reach the answer

Once the question house is set, the engine checks several things and gives each an auspicious or inauspicious score:

• Where the lord of the question house is — auspicious in the 1st, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th, 10th and 11th houses; middling in the 2nd and 3rd; obstruction in the 6th, 8th and 12th.
• The lord's strength — exalted, in its own sign, or debilitated.
• Its relation to the lagna lord — how close the questioner (the lagna) and the subject (the question house) are.
• The karaka planets — for example Venus and Jupiter for marriage, the Sun and Saturn for a job.
• Aspects of benefic planets on the question house.
• The Moon — which house it is in, whether it is moving towards the lord, and whether it is Shukla or Krishna Paksha.

Together these give one of four answers — yes, possibly, uncertain, or not at this moment — with the reason why each planet points that way, and a hint of when the result may come. The reasons are shown so that you can see for yourself where the answer came from.

How to ask so the answer is useful

• One question at a time. In a double question like "how will my job and my marriage go", it is unclear which house to read.
• Choose the right subject. The question house follows from the subject — a business question entered under "job" reads the wrong house.
• Give the city you are in now. The lagna changes with place — what is needed is where you ask from, not your birthplace.
• Do not ask the same question again and again. The degree of the lagna moves every minute, and sometimes its sign changes within minutes — so the answer can change too. Repeating the question to find the answer you want takes away the meaning of the moment — look at the chart of the first sincere question.
