Gulika Lagna and Mandi: Calculation and Effects in 12 Houses

“The sage Mandavya says: Mandi and Gulika, the two sons of Saturn, are malefic; in whatever sign or house they stand, they do great harm to that house.”

Gulika (also written Gulik) and Mandi are two sensitive points of the birth chart. They are not planets but upagrahas — sub-planets computed from time. The texts call them sons of Saturn, sons of Yama, or pranahara. Following Harihar Majumdar's book on applied astrology (pp. 128–134), this article shows how Gulika lagna is calculated, how Mandi differs from it, and what Gulika indicates in each house.

📌 A common confusion: South Indian panchangs list a daily inauspicious period called “Gulika kalam”. This article is not about that daily window — it is about Gulika lagna, the exact sign and degree of Gulika in a birth chart. The Vishuddha Siddhanta panjika does not give a daily Gulika kalam, so our panjika page does not show one either.

How Gulika lagna is calculated

The dinaman of the birth day (sunrise to sunset) is divided into eight parts, and each part has a ruling planet. The first part belongs to the lord of the weekday, and the rest follow in order — Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn. The part ruled by Saturn is Gulika. For a night birth the ratriman (sunset to next sunrise) is divided into eight, and the first part belongs to the fifth planet counted from the weekday lord.

From this rule the book gives a simple table — the “Gulika number” for each weekday:

SunMonTueWedThuFriSat
Day7654321
Night3217654

Dividing the dinaman or ratriman by 8 gives the yamardhaman. Multiplying it by the Gulika number gives the Gulika ishta danda — the lagna rising that long after sunrise (after sunset for a night birth) is Gulika lagna. Note that the full number is used: the book takes the end of Saturn's part.

📖 The book's example: 30 April 1953 (17 Baishakh 1360 BS), Thursday, 10 a.m., Kolkata. Dinaman 32 danda 5 pala 5 vipala; divided by 8, yamardhaman 4|0|38. Thursday's day Gulika number is 3, so the Gulika ishta danda is 4|0|38 × 3 = 12|1|54 — and Gulika lagna falls in Gemini.

One subtle point: the weekday changes at sunrise, not at midnight. A birth between midnight and sunrise belongs to the previous day's night, and takes the previous weekday's night number.

How Mandi differs from Gulika

Many use Gulika and Mandi as one, but the book is clear: “in truth Gulika and Mandi are two different things”. The rule for Mandi: multiply the dinaman by 26, 22, 18, 14, 10, 6, 2 for Sunday onwards and divide by 30; the result is Mandi's ishta danda, and the lagna at that moment is Mandi. For a night birth the same fifth-weekday rule as Gulika applies. And the book says — the effects of the two by position are the same.

Gulika in each house — its effect

The book's general principle: the house Gulika occupies is harmed. But in the upachaya houses (3rd, 6th, 10th, 11th) Gulika is auspicious. The book's language is stern — a guide to caution, not a threat. Below is the book's indication, with its meaning in today's terms:

  • Ascendant: an indication of sorrow in life — the mind can grow heavy easily; patience and good company help.
  • 2nd: want of money and a leaning towards vices (intoxicants, aimless wandering and the like) — discipline in saving matters most.
  • 3rd (auspicious): foremost in one's community, virtuous and dear to good people — leadership and a good name in one's own circle.
  • 4th: an indication of unhappiness — peace of mind does not come easily; time with home and family brings balance.
  • 5th: lack of faith and want of money — in faith and money alike, decide with care.
  • 6th (auspicious): energetic, firm in resolve, victorious over enemies — winning by standing firm in competition.
  • 7th: delay in marriage, discord in married life, few friends — the author himself observed that with Gulika in the 7th, or in the navamsha sign of the 7th lord, marriage is needlessly delayed. So no haste in the decision to marry.
  • 8th: great anger and financial hardship — restraint in anger and savings for hard times are the safeguards.
  • 9th: many troubles and a habit of speaking ill of others — restraint in speech and respect for elders are important.
  • 10th (auspicious): blessed with happiness and fortune, generous, devoted to gods and the learned — a good name at work.
  • 11th (auspicious): wealthy, brave, righteous and ever fortunate in gains.
  • 12th: irreverence and a fierce temperament — a rein on temper and steadiness in faith are needed.

Remember, these are general indications of a single point. A full judgement weighs the whole chart — the lagna lord, the house lords, the dasha.

Pranapada lagna — an old test of the birth time

In the same chapter the book gives the rule for Pranapada lagna: convert the birth time in danda into signs, degrees and minutes (1 danda = 4 signs, 1 pala = 2 degrees, 1 vipala = 2 minutes), then add the Sun's longitude — as it is if the Sun is in a movable sign, taken to the ninth movable sign if in a fixed sign, and to the fifth movable sign if in a dual sign. If Pranapada falls in the 5th, 9th or 7th sign from the birth lagna, the birth time is taken as correct. But the author himself warns that this test is “very laborious” — Pranapada moves about 5 degrees every minute, so a birth time known only to the minute cannot give a final verdict by it.
